Maybe you are here because you or your loved one is struggling with an addiction and you’re looking for help in working through these issues. At Pelham Psychology, we know that addiction can destroy lives, harm relationships, and leave you feeling lost and hopeless – about yourself or a loved one.

There IS hope. 

At our specialized boutique practice we use effective, research-backed approaches to thoroughly assess you, enhance and sustain your motivation, and support you through the process of changing your relationship with substances and/or addictive behaviors.  Addictions often coexist with other issues such as anxiety disorders, OCD, trauma, and ADHD.  We treat you as you as a whole human being, and we acknowledge that there are many reasons why people use substances. 

We know that there are many things that make it hard to stop or cut back, and there are also many supports and options to get you where you want to be.  We collaborate with you to develop a treatment plan that is appropriate to your needs and your specific situation.

When applicable, we work directly with family members doing family coaching and ensure that your family gets support in this process.

We have have experience treating various types of addictive behaviors, including:

  • Alcohol Use Disorder

  • Cannabis Use Disorder

  • Stimulant Use Disorders (e.g., cocaine, Adderall)

  • Opioid Use Disorders

  • Gambling Issues

  • Binge Eating Disorder

  • Technology-related behaviors (video games, smart phone use, online gambling, social media use)

We are experts in treating addictive disorders. We use the following evidence-based approaches:

  • Motivational Interviewing

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) including Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA)

  • Treating common co-occurring issues including trauma, anxiety disorders, and ADHD

  • The Invitation to Change Model

  • Involving family members in treatment when appropriate

  • Drug testing when appropriate

  • Collaborating with psychopharmacologists providing medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders (e.g., Antabuse/disulfiram, naltrexone/Vivitrol, Suboxone/buprenorphine)

FAQs

  • Our practice is a more individualized and private setting than other treatment centers.  It is not a large program, rather it is a small practice that can provide and connect you with the highest quality addiction treatment in the NYC Metro area and beyond.  Having worked in addiction psychology in the New York City area for many years, we are familiar with the treatment landscape locally and nationally and can refer to addiction psychiatrists, group therapy, intensive outpatient programs, rehabs, and other supports such as sober living and self-help groups as appropriate.

  • Yes.  We know that addiction treatment and recovery often involves various providers such as psychiatrists, family therapists, group therapists, case managers, and residential programs.  We have extensive experience collaborating with other team members (with permission) to make treatment as coordinated as possible.

  • Yes.  There is ample evidence that taking medications can enhance outcomes in addiction treatment.  These medications include disulfiram (Antabuse), Vivitrol (naltrexone), and buprenorphine (Suboxone).  MATs can support both abstinence and a reduction in use.  Furthermore, treating comorbid issues like anxiety and ADHD with medications can enhance addiction treatment outcomes, because untreated or inadequately treated anxiety, trauma, and ADHD often fuel addictive disorders.

  • You may need rehab, but often addiction treatment can be done on an outpatient basis so that you don’t have to take a break from your family, job, and/or community.  At Pelham Psychology we can work with you to figure out the best plan forward for you or your loved one. While this  may include residential treatment, it is sometimes worthwhile trying outpatient treatment before rehab.  We can help you figure out the right next step.

  • That’s OK. You don’t need to stop your addictive behaviors, or even feel ready to stop, in order to benefit from treatment. Part of your therapy process may include enhancing your motivation to stop, reduce or moderate, or addressing other issues (such as relationships, anxiety, trauma, or other life stressors) that may feel intertwined with substance use.

  • It is common for people with addictive behaviors to need multiple episodes of treatment, or even a new approach to treatment, to achieve long term success changing these behaviors.  Even if you have been to therapy or rehab before, additional treatment might be necessary to help you achieve your goals in a sustained way.
